SOUTHERN ARIZONA – In one of the few decisions on Capital Hill as of late that makes sense, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has rejected a resolution from Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee honoring the late pop star, Michael Jackson.
“I don’t think it’s necessary,” Pelosi said in her weekly press conference to reporters. She added that honoring Jackson, who she described as a “great performer”, might bring up controversy that the House should not be dealing with at this time.
There is “plenty of opportunity on the floor of the House to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish,” she added.
The resolution, Ms. Jackson said, would have stood as a symbolic gesture from lawmakers without legal or political implications. She presented a framed copy of the resolution at the pop star’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
