Over 400 postal facilities prepare for shutdown

Marked by the economic downturn and a greater reliance on Internet technology, 413 postal facilities throughout the country have been slated for closure as mail volume continues to decline.

At one point, the closure list had surpassed 700.  Postmaster General John Potter has said that he wants to keep as many of the 37,000 facilities open as possible.

Other cost savings measures being implemented by the postal service include cuts to more than 100 million working hours, adjusting mail routes, a hiring freeze, worker layoffs and stopping any construction of new postal facilities.
