According to reports, President Obama will announce from West Point next Tuesday that he plans to send an additional 30,000 to 35,000 soldiers into Afghanistan, bringing the number of U.S. troops in the area up to more than 100,000.

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Wesley R. Brewster performs Taps near the end of a memorial service for nine U.S. Marines and one sailor on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Nov. 17, 2009. The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment held the service for the troops, who were killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In a war without any apparent end and void of any real discernible strategy for victory, most believers in a small government strongly oppose prolonging the misery in the area, supporting instead a plan that would withdraw all of our troops from the war-torn nation.
Although Obama intends on “finishing the job”, the job is clearly much, much bigger than anyone in the United States government had expected. Fighting a terror movement, rather than a rogue nation, necessitates a strong, committed engagement in a variety of hot spots around the world with a clear end strategy in place. What appears to be happening now is nothing more than throwing more troops at the problem and hoping it will magically go away amid a bunch of dead terrorists – all the while, our borders remain wide open here at home.
If the administration is not committed to keeping our boys safe in a military engagement that not only makes sense, but also contains achievable, desirable goals, then it is the responsibility and obligation of our president to bring our boys home, not stand at West Point delivering a speech that makes the American people believe our government suddenly realizes the path forward.
October was the deadliest month yet for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. Polls indicate falling support for the war in Afghanistan and our supposed “War on Terror” in general. Nation building is clearly not popular, not achievable and not reasonable given our economic viability and expertise amongst our government officials.
The War on Terror will continue to be a sham until our government finally decides to protect our borders and enforce our immigration laws rather than deploying our military thousands of miles overseas in sand-scorched lands and rugged mountainous regions under the presumed guise of ridding the world of terrorism.
