Most recognized for her staunch support of the Fairness Doctrine, New York Democratic representative Louise Slaughter said the health care bill is “flawed” and “not worthy of the historic vote that the House took months ago”, and Congress would be wise to start completely over.
Slaughter is the chairwoman of the House Rules Committee and also helps head up the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus.
Written as an editorial submission to CNN, Slaughter argued that forcing Americans into private insurance company plans, subsidized by taxpayers, will “do almost nothing to reform health care but will be a windfall for insurance companies.”
“I do not want to subsidize the private insurance market; the whole point of creating a government option is to bring prices down. Insisting on a government mandate to have insurance without a better alternative to the status quo is not true reform,” she wrote.
Instead, Slaughter supports the public option, which is a program that the Democratic representative apparently believes will spark competition within the health industry. Without it, she said, the bill is not worthy of those who support it.
