Our new design

Those most familiar with the SmallGovTimes.com web site will certainly notice the dramatic changes that have taken place with the look and feel of this web site. We take user experience of this web site as our top priority, and that necessitated the change, and here is why.

Why the change?

The old web site design served us well, very well. All the code was hand-written by the creator and editor of this web site, Steve Adcock. It stood the test of time better than we could have ever hoped. But as the site continued to grow and became more popular, the limitations of a hand-build solution became more and more visible.

Users probably didn’t see any of these limitations, but those of us behind the scenes did. The problems stemmed from unnecessary labor when adding new articles to the system and formatting them to work within the site’s design and color scheme. The solution to these problems was to find a more robust and tested content management system that allows for more flexibility and improves the user experience.

The solution

The solution was to use a very popular open-source content management system known as Wordpress. Wordpress is extremely modular (flexible), supports a wide variety of themes and countless plugins and extensions that work to build the core features of the web site. Many of the new features of this web site are powered by the flexibility that the content management system provides.

What about the old site?

The old site is sticking around for a while for archival purposes and to preserve links that exist from external web sites. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be slowly migrating the article content over from the old web site into the new one, and any new articles will only appear here within the new web site.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the new web site, we’d love to hear them. Simply use the Contact Us link at the top of the page, or click here.
