December 14th marks the first anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook incident where a deranged man gunned down 26 innocent teachers and children in a “gun free” school in Newtown, Connecticut. Defenseless and vulnerable, innocent lives were lost as Adam Lanza enjoyed several minutes of indiscriminate shooting into classrooms without any fear of being shot at.
School policy provided free reign for Lanza to murder.
Several gun rights organizations have marked Demember 14th as “Guns Save Lives Day” in support of using guns to defend the most innocent of people from gunman just like Lanza. “Americans are concerned about attempts to erode their gun ownership rights, and for good reason. Our mission with Guns Save Lives Day is to assure them our groups are working day and night to thwart government gun-grabbers at every opportunity. We are going to show America that there is a good side to guns,” writes GunsSaveLivesDay.com.
Unfortunately, the Sandy Hook shooting provided an emotional environment that enabled states to clamp down on law-abiding gun ownership. Often hastily formulated and overzealous in reach, many gun laws are so incomprehensibly complex and tough to enforce that many sheriffs around the nation refuse to enforce them. In Colorado, two politicians were successfully recalled for their roll in passing clearly unpopular controls on law-abiding gun ownership.
As the civilian disarmament crowd continues to clamor for more regulations for law-abiding citizens using a well-publicized playbook, gun supporters combat the emotional climate of gun tragedies by highlighting how gun laws directly contribute to gun crime. It is no secret that gun free zones contribute to gun crimes. Evidence continues to mount that gun control does not reduce gun violence. John Lott’s book presents numbers that suggest an increase in gun ownership may prevent crime.
The evidence is there, and December 14th marks a day that illustrates what can happen when clear evidence is not heeded, and how dangerous many gun laws are. The effect on law-abiding gun possession is flat deadly.
