I would like to commend Alan Burkhart on this article. It is written from the heart. I'm the President of the Well Spouse Association (http://wellspouse.org), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the support of spouses or partners of people with chronic illness and/or disability. Although Dana Reeve was not a member of the WSA, she was certainly a spousal caregiver, and she did what all of our members do -- give of themselves to help their ill spouses.
Every one of them, just like Dana Reeve did, continues to juggle work, household duties, finances, personal health care, and health care case management for their ill spouses. And in the background, there's the constant concern and worry for their mate. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary work -- just less noticed than Dana Reeve was, with her support of her husband and of his charity for spinal cord research during his life, and on after his death.
If you know someone like this, please tell them about the support the WSA can offer -- support groups, mentors, online Forum, round-robin postal mail lists, national conference and respite weekends, and a newsletter called Mainstay. Members quickly learn the value of our slogan: You are not alone. For more info, call 1-800-838-0879 or EM info@wellspouse.org .
