Saddam: Try Him. Convict Him. Kill Him.

"We've Got Him"

And with those words, the world discovered that Saddam Hussein, one of the most wanted people on the face of the earth, was in custody of the United States military. And no words of mine can possibly add to the elation and relief that the largest manhunt in the history of the world had come to a victorious conclusion.

Those who read my words over this past summer will correctly note that I felt, at the time, that Saddam was dead ---- killed in that first nights' precision bombing. The way his military, and his beloved cities of Baghdad and Tikrit, crumbled and came under American control so quickly, I was sure that his influence was not being felt by those pledged (and threatened) to fight the 'infidels' to the death.

Well, I was wrong. And you know what? I'm glad, too. Far better just to capture that tyrant alive, and let him face a jury of his peers.

But how ironic is it that Saddam, the man encouraged his followers to 'fight to the death,' didn't even attempt to use the pistol he grasped in his hands as he was being lifted from the den he shared with rats and other vermin. Faced with death, the cowardly former dictator gave up, pleading soldiers not to shoot him.

Politically, President Bush has been given a well-deserved shot-in-the-arm with Saddam's capture. My thoughts are that his re-election in 2004 is practically sealed, unless the economy or some major disaster casts a shadow over the bright sunshine that falls over the landscape of liberty and justice.

As for the democratic presidential candidates, the capture of Saddam has elicited sparks from the verbal cannons of each camp. Joe Lieberman didn't waste a beat when he rapped democratic front-runner, Howard Dean, by accurately observing that Saddam would still be in power had Dean been in the White House. A shouting match has ensued, and the verbal attacks being hurled among the democratic candidates are confusing even die-hard liberals.

How thoughtful that the democrats are assisting in their own demise.

Back to Saddam.

So what do we do now? It sounds like things are on the right track. We're going to let Iraq try and punish the sinister heathen, which will add legitimacy to his eventual prosecution by the very people he had oppressed. Even better is the possibility that Saddam Hussein could face the sentence of death. My suggestion is to let Saddam himself choose the method of his termination, based on a list of the cruel and inhumane techniques he ordered upon his own people.

Personally, I say they should tie the coward to a pole, and allow families of victims to stone the bastard to death.

Right now, however, Saddam is worth plenty of us, alive. The things he knows, and the people he knows, are of invaluable importance. Perhaps we should let Iraqi interrogators use some of Saddam's methods of torture to extract information. I wonder what Saddam would think about having his fingernails pulled off with a pair of pliers? Or, would that be lowering themselves to his barbaric level?

I say, tit for tat.

OK, we are a civilized society. And we must set an example. Let Iraq put this man through their own judicial process. Let's not allow Arab nations to accuse the U.S of influencing the lengthy and complicated trial that follows. Let Iraq try him, convict him, and kill him.

Oh! One last thing. I wonder if Johnny Cochran will actually defend Saddam Hussein, as he said he would in an interview earlier this year, during Gulf War II? Huh? How bout' it, Johnny?
