SmallGovTimes.comReagan: Saving America one last time By: Justin Darr | Published on 06/06/04 America has lost a giant. President Ronald Reagan came to lead America in one of its greatest times of need. American citizens were being held hostage by terrorists in Iran, Democratic leadership of the economy had produced the unprecedented phenomena of ?stag-flation? (the combination of high interest rates, high inflation, and economic decline), and President Jimmy Carter was lecturing the American people that we were in a ?malaise? and would have to start understanding that the era of ever increasing prosperity had come to an end. For the first time in our history, many feared the American Dream had died. In stepped Ronald Reagan with the bold statement of optimism that it was ?morning in America?, our best days had yet to begin, and anyone who tried to tell you your limitations was only ?indicating the limitations of themselves.? Ronald Reagan made us proud to be Americans again. While this is probably the 20th eulogy of the Gipper?s you have read, I do not intend to focus on how Reagan saved America in the 1980?s, but how, with his passing, he has one last time stepped forward to save America again in the 21st Century. As the weeks and months pass, you will be hearing pundits and politicians from all sides of the political spectrum praising President Reagan. It is certain that Senator John Kerry will mark ?the death of a great American?, and long forgotten names from the Left will step forward with amusing anecdotes about their ?friendships? with the President. Not to throw water on this love fest, but I remember all of the nasty trash these ?friends? said about Reagan and their constant attempts to obstruct his goals. In his day, Reagan was ?dangerous?, a ?madman?, a ?reckless cowboy?, and the Lefts? perennial favorite, ?stupid?. Remember the old joke that Liberals used to love telling each other, ?What do McDonald?s and America have in common? They?re both run by a clown named Ronald.? I do not intend to disparage legitimate political opponents of President Reagan from offering comments of respect if not for the man, at least for his office. Thomas ?Tip? O?Neil, while a bitter political foe of the President?s, forged an honest friendship with Reagan and found ways to work together with him to benefit the country. However, many Liberals are solemnly praising Reagan not out of sense of loss or respect, but for their political survival. The last thing Liberals want in an election year is to have America reminded of what a mess they made out of the country the last time Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress and the Presidency. Most of all, Liberals do not want America reminded that the defeatist, we need the U.N., safety through appeasement and weakness padlum they are spouting today is the same rhetoric that led to America to failure and ?malaise? 25 years ago. Not to mention that fact that today?s political ?destruction machines? were created by the Democrats in a vain attempt to derail the Reagan Revolution. Ronald Reagan?s passing will shine the light of truth on today?s Liberals. It was John Kerry who traveled to Nicaragua to hob knob with yet another group of Communists to criticize Reagan?s support of the Contra rebels. Teddy Kennedy screamed it was ?reckless? to stand up to the Soviets and Reagan would start World War III. Grenada was another Vietnam, the bombing of Libya was another Vietnam, and Beirut was another Vietnam. And, most of all, how the policies of appeasement that failed with Hitler and the Soviets are now being championed as the solution to Islamic Terrorism. How many times do the Liberals have to be proven wrong before America realizes that they have no idea of what they are doing? Ronald Reagan?s last gift to America is that now all of these facts will be brought back into sharp focus. I can see President Reagan looking down at today?s Liberals smiling and saying ?there they go again.? Perhaps it is Providence that has led to Reagan?s passing at this time. How fitting it is for a man who loved America so much that his death would come as we face yet another time of need. As George W. Bush faces a tough reelection bid against the most liberal candidate since Walter Mondale, the Great Communicator has stepped forward to remind us once again that it is morning in America, our best days are yet to come, and peace can only come through strength. There are no words that are more needed now. At the Republican Convention in 1988, Reagan asked us to ?win one more for the Gipper?. In 2004, the Gipper is winning one last one for us.
