Politics, panaceas and other pearls of wisdom

Have you noticed that lately the favorite question to Republicans on the Sunday News Shows is "Since you have control of both the House and the Senate, how come you haven't done ----?" Many of the e-mails I get, too, are along these lines asking why President Bush has not passed a law to do this or do that! Does not this approach mean that civics needs to be taught more?

1.) A President cannot make laws; he or she has to rely on Congress, the Legislative branch, to make the changes that only new laws can do.

2.) It is no longer a matter of which party is in control of Congress. Rather, it is a matter of which ideology has a super-majority of power needed to get laws on the books. The Left and the Right are made up of members of both parties. So when it come to elections, forget who claims to be a Republican or who insists on being called a Democrat; vote for the person who shows by his or her philosophy and past actions that he or she is on your side of the political spectrum.

I love petitions and will sign a legitimate one that will work to make government better for the people. But have you noticed how many so-called petitions are arriving by e-mail? They ask you to just add your name and then forward it to your friends. The 200th person to sign is supposed to forward the petition with all these names on to the President or the Governor or even a poor Mayor.

Now what makes people think that this is valid? Can't people realize that government staffers will just throw away those that come from e-mails! Why? Because the so-called signatures are probably faked! Anyone can sit down at a computer and write in a thousand names from a phone book and send it in to a government official. The petition could read that these thousand people all want taxes for the year 2006 returned or some other crazy thing. There would be no proof of authenticity or method for checking against a voting list! Any person receiving such a petition can also change the typed reasons for signing it to anything he or she wants before sending it on. Let's say a petition arrives to make English the official language. After you add your name to the list, there is nothing to prevent the next person from changing the word. "English" to "Arabic" before sending on the list of 200 names! It is a waste of valuable time, yours and mine. If we are really serious about something important for America, we need to spend our time starting official written petitions. Then we should start going door-to-door getting legal signatures with correct legal addresses signed by pen. Let's not assume we are accomplishing anything by e-mailing phony petitions.

Michael Ramirez, an editorial cartoonist for Copley Newspapers has drawn a wonderful cartoon of what would have happened if today's political correctness had been used during WWII. He shows American soldiers on German soil with the leader saying to his troops, "Let’s go get some Germans." One trooper answers, "Isn't that racial profiling?" while another states "Not all Germans want to kill us." A third replies. "Yeah, some are Austrian" and a fourth yells, "And for goodness sake, don’t even think about wiretapping."

Today, we can't even call the terrorists "Islamic Fascists" anymore. CAIR (The Council on American-Islamic Relations) has just ordered our President to stop calling them that. CAIR members have had their feelings hurt! We Christians and Jews apparently are not allowed to feel bad about the thousands of innocent American civilian men, women and children killed on 9/11, nor all those innocents who have suffered from suicide bombers and hidden explosives. But, CAIR apparently does have some ACLU attorneys, the Murthas, Pelosis, and Reids on their side, so what can we do?

November 7 will give us the answer as we see who has the courage to vote as did the Iraqis who walked along bullet-ridden dirt streets for miles in order to stain their fingers and vote so as to gain some form of freedom. We drive to our polls on paved roads in air-conditioned cars, if it is not raining. Will we vote to fight for freedom or vote to cut and run, hoping that we can talk our way to peace? Will we even bother to vote? Fewer than 40% of Californians bothered to vote in 2004! Nationally, only 64% voted.

What are you doing on Election Day in 2006?

I was shocked to view on TV news the other night that the California Legislature has voted to change presidential voting from the current Electoral College system to popular voting. If enough states do this, the far left will control all presidential elections from then on as the popular vote will be controlled by the giant metropolitan cities only ---LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Detroit, Chicago, New Jersey, New York Boston et al. Basically, the two coasts will always choose a Democrat to be president. The heartland of small towns will have no say.

Our forefathers put in an electoral college so that all cities and states would be able to be represented. The Democrats keep propagandizing that this will be one person, one vote. Not so! Over half the nation will be unable to be a part of a Presidential election since only the votes of the metropolitan cities will be valid as they swamp the small towns with their electoral tsunamis!

This is a smart move for the Socialists and Democrats, but a very bad move for all Republicans and Independents! The Democrats have learned an important fact from the ad agencies and the Vietnam or Iraq wars: If you control the media and use all the P.R. tools available to trick the American public, you will always win your way, whether it is to win an ad campaign or to win a battle for civilian minds during a war. Clever TV ads, many using actors costumed as union members, policemen, firemen and teachers, fooled enough voters, in the 2004 elections, to make them kill all of California's propositions. Now new ads are being set up to make sure that all Presidents of the USA will be similar in thought and deed to Gore, Kerry, Kennedy (Teddy) and Clinton (Hillary). Is this what we really want? Don't lose the current Electoral College. If you do, you may also lose your culture and your country!
