Texas Representative Ron Paul filed papers on Thursday to begin a presidential exploratory committee, which allows candidates to collect money in support of their bid for the White House.

Unfortunately, the American people have grown comfortable with big federal government control, and Paul’s campaign knows it will be a tough battle positioning him for victory in 2008. “There is no question that it is an uphill battle,“ Kent Snyder, the chairman of Paul’s exploratory committee, said.

The Texas representative is a bit of a maverick in Washington D.C., opposing big government policies and demanding strict constitutional limitations on the reach of the federal government. “The Taxpayer’s Best Friend”, as Paul labels himself, has consistently ranked well within the National Taxpayers Union, an advocacy group that supports a limited and constitutional federal government and low, fair taxation.

Paul is a Libertarian who caucuses with the GOP. Paul’s stance on limited federal government gets him relatively little monetary support from GOP donors, but Paul enjoys grassroots support from limited government advocacy groups like the Small Government Times and other organizations nationwide.

Paul is expected to make a final presidential decision in the next couple of weeks. Snyder said Paul’s candidacy will be built on grassroots support, and this election cycle may uncover how powerful America’s grassroots efforts can be.
