Fred Thompson doubts his own presidency

The "Telegraph" is reporting today that Fred Thompson, shortly before an interview with Fox News' Carl Cameron, expressed doubts that he will become the next president of the United States.

"Trying to encourage his studio to hurry up so an interview could start, Carl Cameron of Fox News said into his microphone: "The next president of the United States has a schedule to keep." Standing beside him, a deadpan Mr Thompson interjected: "And so do I."," said the article.

While some aids seemed amused by the comment, Cameron quickly snapped back, "You can't do that kind of stuff!"

This latest Thompson incident adds fuel to the assumption among many that Thompson has not yet put all his energy into this race, lacks the motivation to win and seems generally subdued on the campaign trail.

Many will remember when Thompson took flack over his request for applause while speaking in front of an Iowa audience a several weeks ago.

Before the interview, Thompson had given a speech in front of a group of New Hampshire political elites, but left with something less of a cheering crowd. “This felt very pessimistic”, one respondent said. “He doesn't have the fire and brimstone that excites people or gives them a reason to vote for him,” he continued.

New Hampshire's state Republican chairman said Thompson made a mistake when officially announcing his candidacy on the Jay Jeno late-night comedy program rather than attending a debate in New Hampshire. “He got off on the wrong foot here”, he said, “whereas most of the other candidates when through that six or 12 months ago.”
