Former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr will likely announce this weekend that he intends to run for the presidency under the Libertarian Party ticket, and plans to mimic the small government and Constitutional principles that Republican Ron Paul focused on earlier in the campaign season.

“Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement,” Barr said of Paul.

Barr continued by saying the Paul campaign has built a solid rallying point to continue down the road to the ultimate goal, a small and constitutional federal government that protects the freedom and liberty of the American people.

Paul's campaign manager Jesse Benton, however, said Paul does not plan on officially endorsing Barr for president because Paul is “trying to work through the Republican Party for change,” rather than looking to a third party for the necessary momentum to fix Washington.

"A lot of them are very willing and very eager to stay with the Republican Party if they're courted, if they're embraced, if they're treated right," Benton said. "If not, they're going to drop out, they're going to look for third parties, like Congressman Barr."

The Libertarian Party nominating convention, where an official party nominee is chosen, will be held in Denver, Colorado over Memorial Day weekend. Mike Gravel, former presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, will be in attendance hoping to win the Libertarian nomination as well.

Barr assisted in the impeachment proceedings of former President Bill Clinton, has worked with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and serves as a board member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
