McCain changes tune on affirmative action
By: SGT News | Published on 07/27/08

Apparently, John McCain's much wider political audience has encouraged the Senator to switch his position on affirmation action, this time supporting a proposed referendum in his home state of Arizona that would ban the practice that many view to be discriminatory.

This contrasts with the Arizona Senator's own position in 1998, where he described an anti-affirmative action effort as "divisive". Today, McCain favors an amendment to the Arizona Constitution that would ban any "preferential treatment" on the basis of superficial qualities like race, sex, ethnicity, national origin or color.

McCain's list of policy changes since he announced his presidency keeps the senator at odds with many Conservative Republicans who view these changes primarily as cheap political ploys aimed at capturing more of the president vote – rather than an honest change of heart on many of these issues.
