Obama thinks it is the government’s job to make college affordable

Presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke to a small group of college students in Michigan on Tuesday and discussed his sufficiently-limited understanding of what the role of the federal government is: making college more affordable.

He said that his administration would require the federal government to provide student loans with taxpayer dollars and supports a $4,000 tax credit for students who cannot afford to go to college on their own (and, apparently, cannot obtain privately-funded student loans on their own).

One might wonder why Obama did not take the complete dive into big government waters, as John Edwards clearly has, and shout “Free college for everyone!” to the group of community college students.

In all truthfulness, government involvement in education was never authorized by our Constitution. The Department of Education is not constitutional, and by logical extension, neither are these educational assistance plans being touted by presidential candidates vying for your vote come November. Giving money away is not one of the few and defined roles of the federal government.

But do not tell that to Obama or McCain for they depend on giving money away to sustain their lucrative political lives.
