Disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has decided to resign from his post after news of his involvement in a high-priced prostitution network became public.

The resignation will be effective Monday.

A top Spitzer staffer said the governor will make his announcement today at 11:30. Lt. Gov. David Paterson will take the reign after the resignation is official, making him the first black governor of the state of New York.

The news of Spitzer's involvement in prostitution broke Monday, prompting the governor to make a quick statement on the matter. "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong," he told reporters at a news conference.
