Obama and the burden of progeny

Much has been said of the eloquence and charisma exhibited by Senator Barack Obama as he plows through the campaign trail. Without doubt, the Illinois senator’s image has virtually evolved into a cult of personality, with supporters crying and even fainting at campaign stops around the country. But there are times, though few and far between, when the critical listener can detect hints of Obama’s true persona.

At a March 29 townhall meeting in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Obama excoriated abstinence-only education with harsh language. “Look, I got two daughters – nine years old and six years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information.”

The main gist of this quote is stunning: in Obama’s estimation, a child is a punishment to his/her parents. Such views should come as no surprise – particularly given that Obama, over the course of his political career, has never been a fetus-friendly candidate.

As Illinois state senator, Obama played an integral role in killing and defeating the Induced Infant Liability Act, a measure that would have compelled hospitals and providers to protect and prolong of the lives of babies who had survived the abortion procedure. This legislation, interestingly enough, had garnered the support of even the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (NARAL) – but not the support of a certain Barack Obama. The reason? Ever the compassionate Democrat, Obama believed that the legislation would simply have placed “one more burden” on the shoulders of pregnant women.

Throughout his political career, Obama has also continually voted to protect and uphold partial-birth abortion – a procedure so grisly as to draw opposition from three in four Americans, as well as pro-abortion advocates like Sen. Hillary Clinton. Obama has called the partial-birth abortion ban an assault on the “very personal decisions between a doctor and a patient,” while his wife, Michelle, considers the method to be a “legitimate medical procedure.”

During his time in the U.S. Senate, Obama has added to his record as one might expect: by voting AYE on providing teens with contraceptives, NAY on notifying parents of their minor children’s out-of-state abortions, and AYE on stem cell research. Indicative of his extreme record, Obama has received a ratings of 0 from The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), and 100 from NARAL. His record speaks for itself.

But beyond the political realities of abortion are the religious implications. How can Obama, a self-admittedly committed Christian, equate babies with STDs and refer to them as “punishments?” Surely, Obama has read or heard Psalm 127, which clearly teaches that “children are a heritage from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.” Did not Obama’s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, criticize abortionists amidst his weekly tirades against Jews, Italians, and whites? Apparently not – even though abortion claims a larger share of the black population than any other ethnic or racial group in America.

The reality is this: to Obama, children are inconvenient hunks of womb matter that, in the name of “women’s choice,” can be disposed of quickly and remorselessly. The American people must wake up and realize that the issue of life is more important than Iraq, the economy, or anything else – for without life, there is nothing else.

“Change we can believe in,” reads Obama’s lofty campaign slogan. But if the American people take a closer look at Barack Obama, they will realize that the change he espouses is not believable; rather, it is logically unfeasible and morally objectionable.

Yet vote for him, they will. And they will deliver unto America a worse punishment than any STD or unexpected child could ever be: they will supply us with Barack Obama, one of the most extreme, inexperienced candidates to seek the presidency in recent history.

When that time comes, God help us all – born and unborn alike.
