Recent Supreme Court decisions leaves much to be desired

By: Steve Adcock | Submitted on: 06/26/03

EDITORIAL - The court established to hear high profile constitutional matters has recently administered rulings that should deeply frighten conservatives and pick at our concern for the future of our nation. Two of them are highlighted below.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court rendered a decision that confirms a public university's right to use race in their admissions process. And, just today, the court struck down Texas sodomy laws, which has broader implications than the ruling itself.

University of Michigan

Although the Supreme Court decision does prevent schools from making race the sole criterion in the admissions process, the court does allow public schools, funded by taxpayer's money, to use race in their admissions process, further hindering our nation's strive towards color-blindness. Further, President Bush' apparent approval of this decision is particularly disappointing.

If the University of Michigan were a private school, they should be able to do as they please in their admissions decisions. However, because it is public and accepts the American people's money in keeping the school alive, I do not want my tax dollars going to a school that gives preference to any race.

Under the guise of diversity, this policy of perverse affirmative action promotes as much racism as affirmative action was apparently designed to circumvent. I hate the argument of race; I can safely say most do. Killing affirmative action and relying on universities to base admissions decisions on cold, hard, numbers, is the best way to keep race out of the spotlight. Make every student, regardless of his or her race, responsible for their academic record.

Conservatives and Americans alike should be rightfully concerned over this ruling, because it does not stop here. If universities are permitted to use race when admitting students, what about employers? Soon will be the day when a white or Hispanic person gets turned down at your local fast food restaurant because "we were looking for someone with a little darker skin."

Texas sodomy laws

The Supreme Court today ruled that Texas cannot ban private and consensual sex between two adults of the same gender. Although most Americans believe that responsible persons should have the freedom to do what they like behind closed doors, provided it does not infringe on another's rights, this ruling has serious implications for the future.

The most striking implication is the question of same sex marriages. I strongly oppose same sex marriages, on the basis of a couple fundamental concerns. First, a natural couple was blessed with the gift of procreation. While a man and a woman hold the ability to procreate, a same sex couple does not, and for a reason. The concept of homosexuality is simply unnatural, and immoral.

Another concern of mine about same sex marriages is: where does this stop? If two people of the same sex wish to marry, what about animal rights activists? What if your next door neighbor is especially fond of his or her dog, or monkey? Don't laugh; ever spoken to an extreme animal rights activist lately?

And what about those children adopted by two men or two women? Word spreads fast in today's schools about poor Johnny having two daddies. Beyond simple verbal harassment, I'm afraid for this child's physical safety. America's schools today already hold the notorious reputation for violence; the last thing any school needs is this type of solid gold ammunition.

Don't think this court decision will go quite this far? Wait and see. Soon, similar laws will come under scrutiny, including those that effect adultery and incest, bestiality or bigamy. God help us.

Stay strong

We encourage each and every conservative to write to their Congress people and fight for the agenda that is best for this country now, and in the future. Never pander to political correctness, or put it above what is moral and right.

These recent Supreme Court decisions are solid evidence of this country's continued slant away from morals, values and complete equality. Instead, the courts seem to be focusing more on political correctness and corrupt agendas as a fruitless attempt to correct previous wrongs.
