Gas explosion brings down building in NYC
By: Steve Adcock | Submitted on: 07/10/06WASHINGTON (SGT) - An apparent gas explosion brought down a 4-story building in New York's Upper East Side this morning in a described "thunderous blast". Eleven people were injured with no reports of death.
The New York Fire Department received a call about the explosion at 8:40 a.m. local time. Tony Snow, the White House Press Secretary, was quick to discount any worries of terrorism.
Witnesses to the event reported a natural gas smell shortly before the explosion.
The owner of the building was among those injured, which included six firefighters with minor injuries and five other civilians who were walking near the incident with injuries ranging from serious to minor. One person refused treatment.
New York's fire department commissioner said that the building owner, a doctor, may have caused the natural gas leak in an attempt to commit suicide after a difficult divorce. He was the only one believed to have been inside when the explosion occurred.
