Republicans must plan now for 2008 or lose to Hillary

By: Lee Ellis | Submitted on: 10/19/06

EDITORIAL - “The GOP is ‘rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic,’ and single women will propel Hillary Clinton to the White House in 2008, says political analyst Dick Morris. Republicans are watching their base shrink dramatically in the wake of the Mark Foley scandal, said Morris, appearing on "Your World" with Neil Cavuto over Fox Cable News.

The former Clinton advisor and confidante pointed to a recent Gallup poll that revealed what has happened among church-going whites, whom Morris called "the ultimate GOP base." They are "splitting 47-47 in their vote," he told Cavuto, who said "Then it's a matter of just sitting home on Election Day.” Of course, their non-voting actually becomes a vote for the other candidate!

This gives us the reason why all Republican federations and organizations must prepare for 2008 now. There is a lot of denial going around about Hillary, by some old-time Republicans, but she does have the money for a strong campaign, and Morris is correct in the fact that she will bring out the single woman vote as well as many other women. Even Mary Bono admitted that some Republican women will vote for Hillary just to get a woman in as President! Breaking that mold of men-only for presidential leadership is more important to many Republicans, Democrats and Independents than ideology.

Add to this the strong media preference, as proven when Hillary ran for Senator in New York. The media supported Hillary all the way. Rick Lazio did not have a chance. Every move in their debate was colored by media reports. Poor Hillary was stalked and threatened unfairly by Lazio, according to the media rant.

This is proof that no man, especially one of the "good ol' boys" has a chance of beating Hillary in 2008, especially in TV debates. Believe me; television is going to be the real battlefield in the 2008 campaigns. The candidate who does best on TV will be the winner! This is how much society has changed. All people are now judged by how they present themselves in our living rooms on a TV set or on a computer monitor. The speech from the back of a train no longer cuts it, nor can a candidate depend on media ads. We expect that the Bush TV appearance on the O’Reilly show for three nights will boost his poll figures very soon, as he came across as a very sincere, clear-thinking leader who wants the best for America rather than for himself!

So what can we do? Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that the Republicans' only chance is to nominate a woman to run against Hillary in order to level the field? What woman has had more experience in leading this nation and in dealing with every foreign leader in this world, earning their respect for her intelligence and ability to communicate with them? What woman can out-debate Hillary on TV better than any man can? What woman has worked her way up from a humble beginning and has battled all the way to become one of the most educated and intelligent persons in the nation? What woman can attract more voters than Hillary? You and I both know that there is only one and that is Dr. Condoleezza Rice.

Republicans need to get her into the Vice President's chair this January, so that this national prominence will convince the majority of voters that she is the most logical person to become the next President of the United States! The voters not only get the first woman in the US to win this coveted post, but also the first Black person to reach this status, and a leader who would be the most accepted by all other world leaders.

Remember the words of Dick Morris which revealed that half of all households in the U.S. are unmarried. He also said that 19 million single women voted in 2000, and 28 million voted in '04. And he bets 35 million will vote in 2006. "The number of single mom, minimum wage earning waitresses who come out and vote are going to be the phenomenon. Hillary might not do that well among the current electorate, Morris said, but she'll grow the electorate by 10 million votes and that's how she'll win.”

The desire for so many American women to have one of their gender to become another "Margaret Thatcher" for their country's President is a drive that we Republicans ignore at our peril.
