I don't recognize my country anymore

By: Felicia Benamon | Submitted on: 08/14/07

EDITORIAL - As I look more and more at current events happening in our country, and just by watching television even, I become more and more aware of how messed up our country is. We are losing our country bit by bit.

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God..." --2 Timothy 3:1-4 (NIV)
I don't recognize it anymore...where are our morals?

The above Bible verse accurately describes the current generations living today. We are living out what the Bible says will happen in the Last Days. And that is scary.

We are facing an increase in food contamination, terror cells in the US, increasing tensions with Iran, and a possible return to a draft (we are fighting on too many war fronts, please read link at the end of this article), but we continue to revel in our own desires, putting heavy emphasis on ourselves, numb to every warning our nation faces. One has to wonder that God is just letting it all happen. We have backed away from Him, and have not trusted or looked to Him. God, Jesus Christ, whom most of us in the US claim to worship, has not been a major part of our lives. So what is He to do?

When we see such disasters befalling our nation, we need to look at where we stand with God. Doesn't anyone see something is wrong with the direction of our country? We are going down the wrong path. God won't bless America until America blesses God. He's been the source of our strength and prosperity for this long, why would we think he won't take care of us now?

It's getting tougher and tougher for Christians who want to share the message of Christ here in the United States. Those who are standing firm in their faith, being bold enough to vocally share it, are facing opposition. From pastors who openly pray aloud on the street, to our military chaplains, who offer words of encouragement.

We have been considered as a country that is a beacon of hope and freedom for many, a country where the majority of Christians have reached out in Christ-like love to others of different religions to come live among us (granted we be able to share the good story of Jesus Christ and that immigrants assimilate into American culture). We are now undergoing a drastic change in America...there are many people who have a goal to drown out the Christian voice.

Christians in this nation need to wake up from their stupor and realize that the United States is trending more secular and perverse by the minute. This requires that we take the focus off of the comforts of everyday life and put it back on Jesus Christ, the supplier of all of our blessings. We are not doing that enough. And because we are not focusing on what's important, we may soon lose what we've been blessed with.

I'd hate to see that happen when those who have come before us have sacrificed so much to make America a shining light. It was because of good and faithful men and women who continued to focus on Christ and allow Him to lead their lives, and because of the work of God's hand that America has been strong. Can I say that for the current citizens of America? I don't know. Please prove me wrong.

So while many of us are worried about the way we look, pursuing the latest items in fashion, keeping up with the Jones's, and competing with the Jones's, our enemies are lining up against us. We should stop the silly stuff and get around to knowing our neighbors and come together for the sake of our nation.

The Bible warns against vanity and selfishness. Why do we continue in this way?

The Reverend Billy Graham is known for leading millions to Christ and advising Presidents. He has been known to lead this nation in prayer during significant events that America has faced. Shortly after 911, I remember his words that resounded sharply... "We have forgotten God." I would hope that he would take the podium again in a nationally televised event and sound the alarm about the need for us to return to God. I hope it won't take another catastrophic event to get people to see the error of our ways.

I hope that Rev. Graham is standing behind our President...offering him advice, advising him to adopt policies that would help the United States instead of hurting it. America needs Godly people who are willing to tell the truth of our nations' situation, to act to make it better, and to motivate others to do the same.

But first, let us check our relationship with the Almighty, with Jesus Christ. Through Him is how we will have a positive impact on our society.
