Obama's call to service

By: Neal Boortz | Submitted on: 07/03/08

EDITORIAL - Under a Barack Obama presidency, your government will expect you to "serve" your country. Yep. Yesterday Obama promised to create new opportunities for national service so that you can do your part to fight poverty, climate change and poor government education. Aren't you excited? Which cause do you want to choose?
"I fight poverty by not being poor."

OK ... let's go through that brief list. I fight poverty by not being poor. I don't believe man has a role in climate change, so there's not a helluvalot I can do there; and those of you who listen to me know that I'm fighting poor government education by telling you the truth about government schools and ranting for school choice. All of this I have been doing without Obama's exhortations.

For you government educated students out there, you won't have a choice whether or not you want to "serve" your country. High school students will be required to serve 50 hours a year of government service and college students will have to serve 100 hours a year. (I wonder if that applies to those who attend private schools.)

Obama said, "Loving your country shouldn't just mean watching fireworks on the 4th of July," which is something that I can agree with. But then he says, "Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it. If you do, your life will be richer, and our country will be stronger." Here we go with this "change" nonsense again. My question is, "Ok Barack, so you want to change this country ... from what to what?" It's that simple. From a capitalist system to one of government control, regulation and redistribution of wealth?

Barack Obama is easy to figure out. He, like so many other Democrats, believe that America is great because of government. Question: Tell me one time in one campaign appearance or in one policy statement where Barack Obama has ever proposed a purely private sector solution to any problem. Now I know I'm preaching to the choir here .. but just remember that thought and use it on some of your ObamaManiac friends. Something like: "OK, you're so impressed with Obama. Can you tell me one time ..... etc etc."

Now clearly, I do not have an issue with people who choose to serve their country. Those who choose to serve in our military are absolutely to be praised and thanked. The same goes for those small business owners who create the vast majority of jobs in this country ... they, too, are serving their country by powering our economy. My point is that it shouldn't take the hand of government to make you serve your country. If you want to serve your country, that's great. But you should serve because you want to not because the government tells you to. But this is what you will be taught in your government schools ... you will be taught how to "serve" your country, be a good government subject, pay your taxes, and that's about it. If you become successful along the way ... just bend over, grab your ankles, and wait for your friendly government representative to come along and administer the appropriate punishment.
