Senator's indictment may hurt GOP

By: News Bites | Submitted on: 07/29/08

(SGT NEWS BITE) - Ted Stevens, the U.S. Senate's longest-serving Republican and one of its most influential members, was indicted Tuesday on seven counts of failing to disclose more than $250,000 in gifts. Stevens, 84, who has long steered federal funds to his home state of Alaska, was forced to give up his positions as top Republican on two panels — including one he once chaired that controls defense spending.
